Trail Ride Guiding and Horse Packing | $599 + GST

Course Overview:

Bear Corner Adventures Bed and Bale and College of the Rockies, is pleased to offer the new Trail Ride Guiding and Horse Packing course. This course is a great way to introduce beginners into the exciting world of horse travel in the Rocky Mountains and to encourage learning for intermediate and experienced riders in this field as well. The aim of this course is to educate people about horse travel and trail riding and guiding. This course can provide the basics of horsemanship and trail guiding with the added knowledge of proper horse packing skills. It can also teach the skills needed for a safe and confident level of overnight riding and packing trips through the mountains for recreational, hunting and fishing trips.

The four day course (plus one day for exam) will cover:

  • Basic horsemanship and anatomy
  • Catching, riding, saddling and packing of horses
  • Trail guiding education and group dynamics
  • Horse first aid and health
  • Transporting horses
  • Proper horse packing
  • Back country emergency horse shoeing

Certification for this industry is for the most part non-existent. Therefore, this course is being designed around the Parks Canada standard of Warden training. With the massive number of horse riding companies in Southern BC and Alberta, this program can possibly open up employment opportunities for the local community and also anyone looking to get into the industry.

Lead instructor Al Bjorn has 42 years of experience in wilderness travel on horseback and horse packing skills in a variety of mountain terrain from the Yukon to Arizona. He has worked for numerous outfitters as a guide and packer on working ranches and dude ranches, as well as 31 years with the Parks Canada Warden Service. Al is a certified instructor to teach Park Wardens and other park staff in basic and advanced horsemanship and backcountry horse travel skills.

Course location will be held at Bear Corner Bed and Bail, 2054 Blaeberry Rd, Golden, BC
