This 18-hour course is for individuals wishing to increase their knowledge of 2-stroke and 4-stroke small gasoline engines. Practical tips and procedures for tune-ups and troubleshooting, and ignition and carburation theory will be reviewed. This will be a practical course so students will need to bring a small engine (lawn mower, chainsaw, etc) item to class. This course is great for hobbyists or those that just want to understand why their small engine is not working.

About the Instructor

Your instructor Carmen Schultz has been a certified Doula since 2000 and has worked in the perinatal field supporting women for 2 decades.  She has furthered her knowledge through ongoing perinatal education and childbirth education studies. Her experience includes working with at-risk youth throughout their pregnancies and into parenthood, managing a local Crisis Pregnancy Centre, co-facilitating a postpartum depression support group as well as teaching prenatal classes to expectant families. Carmen has supported countless women through their journey into parenthood and is the proud mother of two children.

Module Descriptions

Module 1 -- The Doula as a Holistic Birth Practioner

This module is an introduction to the role of a doula. It allows you to learn more about yourself and how this may translate in the support of your clients. You will also learn how a doula can support a woman in birth, stay within her scope of practice and how to assist the client during the stages of natural birth as part of the maternity care team.

Module 2 -- The Doula during Childbirth

You will learn more about the anatomy and physiology of the childbearing woman. You will also learn common terminology and abbreviations used by medical professionals as well as common intervention or procedures a woman may face in childbirth. Spirituality and birth culture will also be explored.

Module 3 -- The Baby, the Business and You

This unit introduces you to the early postpartum. Here you will cover newborn procedures, basic breastfeeding and changes in the mother. You will also explore what it takes to start a successful doula business as well as how to handle some of the challenges a doula may face in her own life.

 

Pre-requisites

If you are planning to complete the entire Birth Doula Studies program and earn your Continuing Education Certificate, you must complete ALL of the following in addition to the online studies:

• A minimum of 20 hours of volunteer experience
• Read and report on 2 books from the required reading list
• Attend 2 births: You must be in attendance for a minimum of 4 hours for each birth

There are some technical requirements and participants must be comfortable with using computers, e-mail and internet.  Instructions on how to access the course are provided to all registered participants prior to each module starting.  Online technical support is also available during the program.

Fly fishing lessons can give you a head start in the basics to help you explore the art and mysteries of fly fishing.  The course includes basic knowledge, skills and fly fishing strategies to get started on local lakes and rivers.

This hands-on course combines theory and practical sessions to introduce you to the basics of fly fishing.

Equipment can be provided

Students should dress to be outside for part of the workshop.

Primarily designed for the urban first aid attendant, this 5-day course takes you through the basics of airway, breathing, and circulation, preparing you to deal with obstructed airways, breathing distress, bleeding control, shock, and CPR. Patient assessment, upper limb splinting and minor wound care are also covered.

Prerequisite:  16 years of age, complete pre-course work, self-disclosure medical certificate, indoor shoes required.

A day of hiking in the Rockies requires preparation. Conditions can change rapidly in the mountains and higher elevations increase your exposure to the sun and stormy weather. To have a safe and fun time outdoors you will need to bring:
• Warm clothes (no cotton), rain jacket and pants, winter gloves, and toque
• Hearty lunch, snacks and plenty of drinking water
• Hiking boots (that have been broken in), hiking poles and extra socks
• Personal blister kit and medical supplies (just in case)
• Sorry NO PETS please

The Burgess Shale hike is very steep and will take between 7 – 10 hours.  It is not suitable for children under the age of eight, people with health problems or people who are uncomfortable with exposed, steep trails.

This program helps prepare students for basic work in the trades industry and/or for further education and training in trades.
Students work on a variety of practical projects and are given instruction on basic tools and safety. A variety of certificates are included in the program such as First Aid, WHMIS, Transportation of Dangerous Goods, Airbrakes, S-100, Traffic Control, and Forklift Training.
Supplies: Students must have safety-toed leather work books/shoes, safety glasses, pens, pencils, three-ring binder, calculator and paper, tape measure and work clothes (coveralls).

Students applying for this program will be required to submit a resume along with their application. As space is limited to 12 seats, students will be required to go through an interview process prior to the start of the program.  Funding options may be available for this and many other courses, please make an appointment with the academic advisor to find out more.

The following courses form part of the online Technical Communication Certificate and examine different aspects of technical communication with a view towards developing the student's expertise in a wide variety of skill areas within this career path.  Students have two years to complete five core courses and three electives.

Overview

Would you love to work overseas teaching English or pursue ESL employment opportunities in Canada?  If so then the Peak TESOL program is a great choice.

The Peak TESOL program is offered in both face-to-face and online formats.  Instructors provide support including plenty of feedback on assignments and help and advice in overseas job searches.

Online Program

For those who prefer to learn at home, this blended delivery program offers flexibility while meeting all the same learning outcomes and providing the same certification as our face-to-face program.

This 120-hour certificate program includes a 20-hour practicum as well as 100 hours of theory and methodology delivered in an easy-to-use interactive Virtual Learning Environment called Moodle.  Instructors provide support within forums in the Moodle classroom, plenty of feedback on assignments and help and advice in overseas job searches.  The theory and methodology is delivered online over a period of 12 weeks with a minimum of 8 hours of coursework completed each week.  The practicum must be completed within 12 months of the start date of the program.

Technical Requirements

A reliable computer, video camera (or webcam – available for as little as $20), speakers, and microphone will be required in order to complete the program.  Participants must be comfortable with using computers, e-mail and internet.  Instructions on how to access the course are provided to all registered participants prior to each module starting.  Online technical support is also available during the program.

Face-to-Face (F2F) Program

The face-to-face Peak TESOL program is a 110-hour certificate program consisting of 100 hours of face-to-face theory and methodology, and 10 hours of practicum.

Each participant will teach five lessons each of which will be followed by a self-reflection and feedback session with your instructor and peers.  In addition, some of the practicum hours are directed observations of professional ESL teachers at work.  One of the 10 units of the course will focus on what you need to know before applying for a job as well as living and working overseas.

Our Peak TESOL program is recognized by TESL Canada!  Successful completion of the 110-hour face-to-face Peak TESOL program and the 10-hour Peak TESOL Applied Practice Module along with a university degree can earn you your TESL Canada Professional Certificate Standard One.  *The Applied Practice Module consists of 7 hours of practice teaching and 3 hours of directed observation.  See below for more information on this module.

WHMIS, short form for Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System, is a nation wide system that was developed to provide a standardized classification system for the control, safe handling, storage, and disposal of hazardous materials in the workplace.

This training program is designed to certify Canadian employees in the identification and handling of Hazardous Materials within the work environment.

Enrollment for TDG is ongoing! You can start the course anytime.

Virtual TDG is designed to provide instruction for Canadian employees on the Transportation of Dangerous Goods Act and Regulations.  TDG training is required for all employees involved in the transportation, storage, and shipment of goods classified as dangerous.

Virtual TDG is available in English/French. The course can be completed in stages and takes approximately 2 to 3 hours to complete.  Upon successful completion of the course, you will be able to print a TDG Certificate.  This Certificate must be signed by your employer/designated manager to be considered valid. Self employed persons may sign off on their own Certificate.

It teaches one-rescuer adult CPR Level A, an introduction to automated external defibrillation (AED) training and other practical first aid skills.

MarketSafe is a food safety training program designed to increase awareness and knowledge for farmers and producers who make, bake or grow products to sell at local farmers' markets, farm gates or other types of temporary food markets. People who successfully complete the MarketSafe course within British Columbia will receive a certificate issued by the Regional Health Authority in the region where the course was taken.

Certification for this industry is for the most part non-existent. Therefore, this course is being designed around the Parks Canada standard of Warden training. With the massive number of horse riding companies in Southern BC and Alberta, this program can possibly open up employment opportunities for the local community and also anyone looking to get into the industry.

Lead instructor Al Bjorn has 42 years of experience in wilderness travel on horseback and horse packing skills in a variety of mountain terrain from the Yukon to Arizona. He has worked for numerous outfitters as a guide and packer on working ranches and dude ranches, as well as 31 years with the Parks Canada Warden Service. Al is a certified instructor to teach Park Wardens and other park staff in basic and advanced horsemanship and backcountry horse travel skills.

The Community Greenhouse did an extensive Winter Harvest Research Project over a two year period to investigate the growing of cold tolerant vegetables in the fall, winter and spring in unheated environments.  Join this two session workshop to learn the results of our research and learn how to create a number of different growing environments, including cold frames to extend your gardening to all four seasons.  Participants will receive cold tolerant vegetable seedlings ready to plant into your garden.

Luanne lives on her organic heritage farm on the east shore of Kootenay Lake. She teaches Creative Writing at the University of British Columbia. Arrive at the College of the Rockies Golden Campus in the beautiful Columbia River Valley of the Rocky Mountain Trench – a fault along which the land dropped over 1000 m  (over half a mile) between two episodes of mountain building.   Enjoy an after dinner introduction to  the study program including pre -hike orientations and an introduction to the regional geology.

Wednesday Aug 7th:  Burgess Shale – Walcott Quarry Hike
Enjoy an all day hike to the Walcott Quarry of the  Burgess Shale.  Described by world renowned experts as “ one of the most important paleontological finds of the 20th century” containing the “world’s most important animal fossils” this destination affords some of the most spectacular views in the Rocky Mountains.

Learn of the rich local human history including the development of Canadian Pacific Railway which was key to the discovery of the fossils.  Learn how these fossils,  and similar ones on the other side of the world in Chengjiang China,  have changed the picture of the history of life.

Your walk above tree-line through alpine- flowered meadows provides a back drop to consider how climate change has created beautiful landscape features such as the azure blue Emerald Lake , spectacular waterfalls from cirque glaciers  and broad hanging valleys.  You will come away with an enriched appreciation for the Canadian Rocky Mountain Parks UNESCO – World Heritage Site as a place of protection, education and interpretation.

Rest your legs while you take a leisurely road trip from Golden out to where the Rocky Mountains first rise from the foothills east of Banff National Park.
This trip will paint the big picture of how the Rocky Mountains were built and subsequently shaped by the action of ice from the last glacial period.  See where the Rockies begin; the story of the building of the Rockies,  including their impact on human history,  will likely redefine how you look at “rock”.
Stand on deposits from a river that ran under a glacier, walk over rock formed from a 150 million year old beach and touch petrified logs from lagoons from warm coastal swamps.

Hike to  Helen Lake in a beautiful alpine meadow with vistas of glaciers along the way.  Walk amidst half a billion year old fossilized colonies of microscopic photosynthesizing bacteria, some of the earliest forms of life.  Excellent preservation in 3-D will let you determine which way the tides were flowing when these organisms were alive. Learn how their photosynthesizing life style created most of the sediment that became the limestone now comprising the Rocky Mountains.

Saturday Aug 10th:  Saskatchewan Glacier and an ancient forest
Earth’s  climate is constantly changing.  There have been many advances and retreats of ice throughout the current Ice Age including the current interglacial period. Walk to an old forest which grew and died as a result of climate change over the last 3000 years.  See stumps of trees that were  killed by the expanding Saskatchewan glacier at the time of the Trojan War.

OSSA Confined Space Entry  Accredited by Fusion Safety Services Inc. 
This six hour course combines knowledge and experience on how to work safely in a confined space. Confined Space Entry and Monitor is a combined one-day with instruction in basic knowledge and proficiency with respect to confined space entry procedures, legislation and the related Regional Code of Practice. Additionally participants may learn knowledge and proficiency in performing the required duties of a Confined Space Monitor.

The one day - eight hour Industrial / Commercial End-User Fall Protection Program will allow you to understand the use of fall protection, as it relates to the work you perform at height. This course is an OSSA certified course through Fall Protection Group.

Enform H2S Alive -  Hydrogen Sulphide Training 
This eight hour (one-day) training course is designed to provide the skills and knowledge for all workers to protect themselves in an environment where there is a hydrogen sulphide (H2S) also known as sour gas hazard. After group discussion of theory and review, practice and being observed performing various different tasks involved in using rescue techniques and breathing; gas detector devices and tubes and breathing equipment, students will individually write a closed-book multiple exam The topics of instruction include the physical properties and health hazards of H2S, and how to protect themselves and others against the hazards present.  In addition, each participant is required to operate and learn maintenance and inspection of a self–contained breathing apparatus, various gas detection monitors, detector tube device, and perform rescue breathing. Students will also have instruction on proper rescue techniques and will be required to perform proper rescue techniques.  This course involves both theory and practical exercises and examinations.  In conformance with the standards set by the Enform, Legislative Standards and regulations, Alberta’s Occupational Health and Safety Act and other relevant legislation and industry best practices.

Being new on the job is hard and learning to speak up for your rights as a worker can sometimes be difficult; but no paycheque is worth getting hurt for. You need to make sure you stay safe and get home in one piece---no matter what. Take the initiative to know what your rights and responsibilities are and how to stay safe in the workplace. 

High school students, young workers and new workers are welcome to attend. 

This course is offered in conjunction with WorkSafeBC Youth Week, May 1-7.

Fall protection is an important issue and mandatory under the Occupational Health and Safety Regulations.

Students must supply their own steel-toed boots, gloves, and safety glasses.

Must produce Fire Suppression Certificates (S100 or S100A).

Landscape General - For anyone applying pesticides on public land and for applicators providing pest management services to clients on private land (to manage insects, diseases and weeds of gardens, ornamental plantings and turf).

Agriculture General:  Most farmers/ranchers will need an “Agricultural General” certificate. This certificate is for managing pests associated with agricultural production of field, orchard, nursery and greenhouse crops, livestock, and poultry.

Each year increasing numbers of skiers, snowboarders, and climbers venture into the mountains to enjoy snow-related outdoor recreation. Regrettably, each year some of these people die in avalanches. AST programs are an essential first step to safe backcountry use in the winter. Course topics include avalanche terrain recognition, avalanche climatology, snow stability evaluation, alpine touring practices, avalanche accidents and search and rescue techniques. This course is instructed by a qualified member of the CAA . Class size limited to 16. 

Prerequisite:  Ski Pass or One-way Day Pass to Fernie Alpine Resort for Field trip, and students must bring a shovel, transceiver, probe, skis or snowboard

The Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) provides information about many hazardous materials used in the workplace. This course covers the requirements of the Federal Hazardous Products Act. This is an online course and you print off your certificate upon successful completion.
