Natural health, and herbal medicine in particular, has become a huge growth industry over the last decade. The College of the Rockies is pleased to offer one of the most comprehensive herbal training programs of its kind in Canada.

The on-line program is self-directed and consists of approximately 350 hours of online and directed home study, which must be completed within a year of registration.

Whether you hope to work in the retail sector (health food store, industry sales representative, pharmacy, or MLM business); plan to start growing herbs; create your own products; or just want to know more about herbs for personal use, then this in-depth program can help provide you with the knowledge you need.

Students are shown basic skills such as balancing the motorcycle, non-mechanical maneuvers, motorcycle inspection, correct use of brakes, proper procedures for starting a motorcycle, use of the clutch and control of the motorcycle at slow speeds, proper acceleration techniques, shifting, hazard avoidance. As confidence increases, students are introduced to use of the transmission and corner negotiation techniques. Moving on to more demanding exercises students are taught how to avoid collisions through the correct application of emergency braking and counter steering techniques.

While there is practical time spent on a motorcycle, there is a portion of the course delivered in a classroom environment. Students learn defensive riding strategies, current rules of the road, and risk awareness skills they use in conjuction with their on-bike skills.

Thorughout the course, emphasis is placed on safety and control. Delivery is such that learners can keep pace with little difficulty. At the end of the course, students are tested to determine how well they have learned. More importantly though, the final test gives the student an idea of where their weaknesses are and where to improve on them.

You can use your own motorcycle or bike rental is available from the instructor. You must have appropriate gear such as helmet, jacket, boots, gloves and rain gear.

About the Instructor

Your instructor Carmen Schultz has been a certified doula with DONA International since 2000. She has worked in the perinatal field supporting women for 17 years.  She has furthered her knowledge through ongoing perinatal education and childbirth education studies. Her experience includes working with at-risk youth throughout their pregnancies and into parenthood, managing a local Crisis Pregnancy Centre, co-facilitating a postpartum depression support group as well as teaching prenatal classes to expectant families. Carmen has supported countless women through their journey into parenthood and is the proud mother of two children.
 

Program Structure

Module 1 -- The Doula as a Holistic Birth Practitioner
September 13 - October 10, 2010

This module is an introduction to the role of a doula. It allows you to learn more about yourself and how this may translate in the support of your clients. You will also learn how a doula can support a woman in birth, stay within her scope of practice and how to assist the client during the stages of natural birth as part of the maternity care team.

Module 2 -- The Doula during Childbirth
October 18 - November 14, 2010

You will learn more about the anatomy and physiology of the childbearing woman. You will also learn common terminology and abbreviations used by medical professionals as well as common intervention or procedures a woman may face in childbirth. Spirituality and birth culture will also be explored.

Module 3 -- The Baby, the Business and You
November 22 - December 19, 2010

This unit introduces you to the early postpartum. Here you will cover newborn procedures, basic breastfeeding and changes in the mother. You will also explore what it takes to start a successful doula business as well as how to handle some of the challenges a doula may face in her own life.

 

Pre-requisites

If you are planning to complete the entire Birth Doula Studies program and earn your Continuing Education Certificate, you must complete ALL of the following in addition to the online studies:

• A minimum of 20 hours of practical volunteer experience

This 4-part series is led by experienced outdoors-woman Jill Christie. She takes you through what you need to know to head out on an enjoyable, adventurous backpacking excursion.

Intro to Backpacking 1: Clothing and Gear
Clothing can make or break a trip in the outdoors! Learn about different clothing materials, their uses, and how to layer effectively. There are also examples and demonstrations
of other gear used when backpacking, such as sleeping bags, tents, and packs.

Intro to Backpacking 2: Food Prep and Stoves
Take a look at some menus and learn to eat well on your trips. This session covers menu planning, food storage, bear hangs, and cook stove varieties.

Intro to Backpacking 3: Knots / Maps and Compasses
Discover the handy knots to use on your backpacking trip. Jill also introduces you to the use of a map and compass.

Intro to Backpacking 4: A Day at Lois Creek
In this session, you pack your gear, bring the right clothing, and plan your meal for a day out at Lois Creek in Kimberley. While there, you create a variety of shelters out of different materials and learn the art of building fires!

Topics include hand sewing, tools and terminology, various seam finishes, fabric preparation, pattern reading, and sewing a garment that actually fits! This 7-month program combines classroom and practical experience, giving students the knowledge, skills and attitudes required to care for individuals in residential care, assisted living facilities, community settings and in their homes.

Many people start their health care career in the Residential Care/Home Support Attendant field. Later they can consider expanding their skills with training at College of the Rockies as a Licensed Practical Nurse or Registered Nurse.

The program is four days per week of instruction in class, lab settings and clinical placements within facilities.

This 350-hour program provides students with the theoretical background and practical training in all aspects of outdoor and greenhouse horticulture propagation, disease and pest control, soils and fertilizers, arboriculture, turf management, landscape design, and landscape construction.

Make a motion picture film the old fashioned way!

Learn about motion painting on film and create an animated film without the use of any technology. Participants learn to create a short 16mm animated film in colour and complete a soundtrack to go with it. Learn to do all of this without the use of a camera or any sound recording devices.

This direct, almost instant, style of filmmaking is hands-on and lots of fun. Apply images directly onto film by painting and etching using markers, inks, steel wool, and small tools. Pictures are accompanied by a handmade optical soundtrack. Your animated motion paintings come alive on the big screen; a real cinematic experience! 

All supplies are included, all ages are welcome, and no experience is necessary.

Many of us have someone in the family who served for his country in one of the wars.  Often the memory of their service has become lost with time.  Sometimes it’s because they did not return home and lie buried in a field in some far away country. Roger Nelson will share the process of gathering information from old photos, public archives records, and other sources that are available if you know where to look. The focus will be on researching Canadian Military Service but a lot of the same information can be obtained about soldiers who have served for other nations.  Students are encouraged to bring what information they have and we will discuss what might be done to learn more based on this.

The Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) provides information about many hazardous materials used in the workplace. This course covers the requirements of the Federal Hazardous Products Act. This is an online course and you print off your certificate upon successful completion.

How we eat has changed a great deal in recent years. Food purchased for a typical weekday meal has travelled an average of over 4000 km from farm to table and we can now eat fresh strawberries year round.

At the same time, we are seeking out the freshest, locally-grown foods our grocers or Farmer's Markets have to offer and terms like "local food", "locavore', "glocal', "terroir", and "the 100 Mile Diet" have become everyday.

In this series of four classes, you will learn about local and global food systems, how a sustainable food system works, the organic food movement, community food security, and the effects of politics and climate change on the world's food supply.

This is a two-day, competency-based course, and covers the basic theory and practical skills that are required to become a qualified traffic control person.

The course consists of classroom and field sessions. Students MUST wear CSA Approved Class 1 steel toed work boots and clothing suitable for the weather. All other required student materials are included in the course fee.

ALL STUDENTS MUST BRING one (1) passport-sized photograph for the new traffic control picture ID (can be a digital photo but must be printed on photo paper, no other paper accepted -- photo size = 1-11/16" x 2-1/8").

The course covers material in the Standard First Aid plus special material on techniques for wilderness and remote areas and offers strategies to provide extended care for up to 24 hrs.

This 20-hour course includes CPR-C & AED and a 3 year certificate.

An EMR license is good for 5 years. Annually, the license holder is responsible for meeting Emergency Medical Assistant (EMALB) licensing requirements in the form of Continuing Medical Education credits (CME) and Patient Contacts. Currently, 20 CME credits and 20 Patient Contacts, annually, are required. CME credits can be counted towards Patient Contacts.

For example, a licensed EMR takes a:

CPR "C" re-certification = 4 CME credits
AED re-certification = 4 CME credits
Basic Trauma Life Support course = 8 CME credits
Attends a Mine Rescue practice (to be determined for approval) = 8 CME credits

= 24 annual CME credits. The license holder now needs only to log 16 patient contacts. These can occur in the capacity of a ski patroller, designated first aid attendant, mine rescue team member, BCAS paramedic, etc.

There are dozens of courses and opportunities to earn credits.

The pre-requisites for an EMR bridging course are: Current OFA Level 3 (preferable within 12 months); Current CPR "C"; Current AED certificate; Medical fitness form (no later than 6 months); Criminal record check; 19 years of age

The EMR bridging course builds on skills already acquired in OFA 3 and adds a few more. Upon successful licensing, the EMR can administer nitrous oxide or entonox for pain control (subject to a medical director), use traction splints, use portable automated suction devices, and many other skills that were not previously covered.

Once the student finishes this 5-day course (with a separate day for evaluation), they can apply to EMALB for a licensing exam. Once this step is complete, and as long as the license holder meets annual CME requirements, the student is not required to attend a formal course for 5 years.

Paramedics wishing to work as designated First Aid Attendants in industry are required to obtain first aid certification in order to qualify to practice as an occupational first aid attendant, which is separately certified in BC. This course consists of four hours of instruction plus a written exam.

OFA Level 3 certification will be issued with expiry date of paramedic license.

The OFA III program is offered with the objective of qualifying candidates for certification as Level III first aid attendants in industry.  Certification is valid for two years from the date of examination.  Students are required to have their Medical Certificate of Fitness form completed prior to the final examination date.  This program is being offered over 5 weeks – two evenings and Saturdays. The focus of the Lifelong Learning Program is the educational interests of adults 50+ however classes and activities are open to all adults, regardless of age, because it’s never too late to learn something new. Become part of a community of active learners!

The Lifelong Learning Program (LLP) is a cost-sustainable membership-driven program, established to meet a wide range of interests of Golden’s growing number of seniors, including the newly retired and semi-retired “boomers”. Classes are usually small, with individual support offered. Here is a great opportunity to continue learning at reduced program activity fees.

Membership in LLP entitles you to special rates for all program activities. Many activities are priced to allow for the fact that older adults are on fixed incomes. There is a yearly membership fee of $20 per person or $15 per person for members of the Golden Seniors Association (plus HST) payable at the time you register. Adults under age 50 and non-members may participate in LLP learning activities as space allows and at the non-member rate.

Fiber Arts
This ongoing special interest group offers an opportunity for you to share, learn, assist others and practice your choice of embroidery, knitting, needle felting, spinning, quilting, crocheting, and sewing. Bring that abandoned project you started ages ago! The group meets Monday afternoons and you are welcome to join at any time. Introduction to Computer Basics 
Computer training is offered through the College of the Rockies Adult Basic Education (ABE) program from September to May. Fitness

Pilates 1 – Better Bones & Balance
If you have difficulty getting up and down from the floor unassisted this is the class for you! Pilates 1 is suitable for adults with mobility challenges and older seniors. Exercises will be done slowly while seated or standing next to a chair and using a wooden dowel for balance. The exercises will help to correct posture, strengthen muscles of the torso, shoulders, legs and feet, improve balance and increase flexibility. Special focus is on using Pilates-based exercises to prevent osteoporotic fractures, make daily tasks easier and to incorporate FUNctional fitness. Dowels will be provided or you may bring your own. Please note: All participants must sign a Liability & Medical Release form before starting the exercise program. Location: Golden Senior’s Centre.

Pilates 2 - Bone Building, Core Strengthening & Toning
Learn fitness and posture principles to improve everyday movement in order to prevent bone loss including body awareness, alignment, breathing and core control with exercises that involve weight-bearing, standing balance, and spinal mobility with special focus on postural correction, form, balance, spine extension, hip extension, fracture prevention and FUNctional fitness! Participants must be able to get up and down from the floor for mat exercises to participate. Mats, foam rollers, resistance bands, stability balls, and free weights will be available or you may bring your own.
*Pre-requisite: You must attend a 2 hour Introduction to Pilates for Bone Building presentation before participating in the classes to learn how to do Pilates exercises safely. Topics will include the principles of proper breathing; postural alignment and self-correction techniques; foot, knee and hip alignment for preparation of weight-bearing and strength training exercises; spinal alignment for fracture prevention and spinal bone building exercises; and core control of the deep abdominals and trunk. Location: Golden Senior’s Centre. There will be no class October 13. September 22 will be a pre-requisite introductory presentation from 12:30 to 2:30.

French Cuisine
Enrich and expand your diet and learn cooking techniques and new recipes in a friendly group atmosphere. Each session includes demonstrations by guest cooks and sampling the delicious creations. An Introduction to the Geology of the Golden Area
Learn more about the geology of the mountains around Golden. Following the successful spring class this session will take a further look at the rock types that occur around Golden, the tectonic processes that built the mountains, how fossils were formed and the process that shaped the landscape we see today. The activity begins with a classroom presentation at the College then a driving tour, stopping at specific sites. * Plan to car pool after the classroom presentation.

Pilates Exercise Program for Better Bones and Balance
Robbi Senderov, a Pilates and fitness instructor specializing in osteoporosis and older adult’s health including bone-building, functional fitness and core conditioning. Regular physical activity, in particular weight-bearing exercise and strength training, is an important factor in reducing the risk of osteoporosis, reducing falls and broken bones, and helping people with osteoporosis remain active. Robbi will give an overview of the two types of classes she will be teaching this fall – Pilates 1, Better Bones & Balance and Pilates 2, Bone Building, Core Strengthening & Toning. Would you love to work overseas teaching English or pursue ESL employment opportunities in Canada? This 120 hour incorporates TESOL teaching content, practical teaching opportunities with ESL foreign students, opportunities to observe a qualified ESL teacher in action, and overseas job information.

This face-to-face Peak TESOL course includes 10 main topic areas delivered by instructors modeling the teaching techniques used in the practicum. Three practice teaching hours per trainee are included in the class time. Outside of class time, trainees are expected to complete readings, some lesson preparation, and seven hours of directed observation of professional ESL teachers. Structured positive and constructive feedback and self-reflection sessions follow each practice teaching and directed observation. Instructors also provide support in overseas job searches.

Pre-requisites

Trainees applying for admission to the Peak TESOL face-to-face program must have completed their senior matriculation (Grade 12). Any trainees who are non-native speakers of English must prove proficiency in English by submitting official documentation for the TOEFL iBT, with a minimum score of 80 overall with a minimum of 20 in each area. In addition, all trainees are required to have an interview with one of the Peak TESOL instructors and to complete a short grammar test.

Emerging Leadership (eLead) is a course for people that want to make a difference. Whether it is moving yourself or your organization to the next level, volunteering for a community project, or improving your interpersonal skills, eLead will provide you with tools needed to succeed.

Learning is achieved though reading materials, website links and discussion forums with the instructor and other learners. Practical case studies are also used for applying leadership concepts and skills.

Hairdressing is starting in August 2010! Actual course dates are TBA.

This 45 week program helps prepare students to complete the practical and theoretical aspects of the Cosmetology Industry Association of BC Certificate of Qualification Exam.

This pre-employment program is to gain knowledge and skills in hairstyling techniques to enable graduates to perform the work of a hairstylist. Students should receive both theoretical and practical skills training in the program including working in a commercial salon setting. Students are assisted to obtain practicum sponsors who will mentor them in the four-week practicum.

Entrance Requirements

1. Minimum Grade 10
2. ACE-IT requires permission from the Career Education Coordinator
3. Applicants must be nonallergic to the solutions used in this occupation.

This occupation is physically demanding and reasonable physical condition is necessary. Strong people skills are required.

Identify river dynamics and utilize all rafting equipment, related safety gear and clothing, demonstrate river rescue and self-rescue techniques and manoeuvrethe raft up to class 4 water using oar and paddle strokes.  Participants must be 19 years of age, a strong swimmer, and understand English.

Course includes:  new 4-day format SFR-T certification ($780 value), 10 days on the Elk and Bull Rivers, rafts – self-bailing, oars, paddles, frames, first aid kits, transportation to and from the river sites, BC Raft Guides Manual, SRT Manual and Certificate of Competency (upon successful completion).  You provide:  Accommodation in Fernie during course, wet or dry suit, PFD, helmet, booties, river knife, and lunches for all river days.

We have formed a new partnership with Cranbrook Farmer’s Market (CFM) to bring you a variety of community living workshops.

The CFM hosts a collection of farmers and vendors who offer a variety of locally made, baked, or grown products. The CFM supports local food and craft producers, promotes agriculture in the East Kootenay, and provides a place for the community to gather.

The Cranbrook Farmer’s Market runs from late June-September and during this time College of the Rockies and CFM are offering short courses on topics such as agriculture, food production, gardening, and crafting, all on-site at the Farmer’s Market. Courses could include Seed Saving, Container Gardening for Kids, Market to Table, and much more.

It provides easy-to-use tools that help in the analysis of project information by using Gantt charts, graphs, tables, and views to track a project and quickly identify when the project is not progressing according to plan.

This hands-on course is designed for project staff members and managers with little experience with MS Project. Upon completion of the course, participants should be able to use the basic features of the tool and use it for day-to-day project management.

Prerequisite: Knowledge of your computer's operating system, file management and a basic understanding of the theories and concepts of project management is essential.

Are you currently a paramedic in BC wishing to work as a designated Occupational First Aid (OFA) attendant in industry? If so, you need to take this required 4-hour workshop to obtain your first aid certification.

Upon successful completion of this bridging course, including a written exam, an OFA Level 3 certificate with “Paramedic in Industry” notation will be issued with expiry date of your paramedic license. This certification is only valid when the paramedic has current licensure as an emergency medical responder, a primary care paramedic, or an advanced care paramedic.

*Note there are 8 home study modules that MUST be completed prior to the start of this workshop. Course materials are provided on a CD and hard copies are available on request for an additional charge.

This course shows students how to use an AED on someone who has suffered a cardiac arrest. This 4 hour course uses video demonstrations and hands-on practice to teach AED operation.

The people whose duty it is to respond to any cardiac arrest at your facility should be trained in AED use. Typically, security guards, ski patrollers, lifeguards and other people whose job description includes emergency response, are logical candidates for training. This Worksafe course is developed by the Workers' Compensation Board of BC. It aims at providing employers and workers with tools to reduce workplace violence, which has increasingly become a concern within a number of occupational sectors -- health care, social services, and retail business, for example.
