Taking on big challenges

Taking on big challenges ~Marlies Romich’s family has worked in and owned tourism-related businesses her entire life. They have also been frequent travellers. All of this experience has fuelled Marlies’ strong interest in a career in the tourism industry.~

When looking to attend college, Marlies chose College of the Rockies because it was located in her hometown and offered a program she was interested in pursuing. “I love the natural beauty of the Cranbrook area and wanted to complete as much of my education here as possible.  College of the Rockies is also a recognized and highly regarded college which allowed me to transfer my courses to other institutions easily.”

After completing the Tourism and Recreation Management Diploma program at College of the Rockies in 2009, Marlies went on to complete a Bachelor of Tourism Management degree with a minor in environmental and economic sustainability at Thompson Rivers University.

After graduating, Marlies returned home to Cranbrook and is now the General Manager of the very popular Heid Out  Restaurant and Brewhouse.  “It is an exciting opportunity to learn the process of opening a business.  As I’ve assumed the General Manager role, I am able to expand my knowledge and experience of day-to-day operations.”

As she undertakes this new challenge in her career, Marlies is happy to have gained her footing at College of the Rockies. “The College provided me with a strong foundation for further education as well as skills to use throughout my career.  It was a great experience and I would highly recommend College of the Rockies to anyone looking for a quality college education.”
