Student Housing Update #1
Though shovels aren’t in the ground quite yet, that doesn’t mean work hasn’t started on our new 96-bed residence facility. Planning and consultations are well underway.
The first student consultation took place on Friday, June 28. Eight dynamic students who currently live in residence provided valuable input to the project architects, project management team, and College planning team. Their great ideas, concerns, and insights will be considered, and whenever possible, implemented, as a final design is completed.
The first stage of project construction will see the current road leading up to the College extended in a loop that will connect back to the parking by the current Purcell House student residence. This road will allow for emergency services access, and will, eventually, also lead to new parking that will be established in conjunction with the new residence facility. Work on the road will be underway in a few weeks’ time.
The new residence facility is intended to welcome its first occupants for September 2020 with full occupancy available for January 2021. The project was announced in March by Melanie Mark, Minister of Advanced Education, Skills and Training as part of its province-wide commitment to student housing. The Province is investing $11.6 million in the $17.7-million project.
