Description:
This course is designed to explore some of the basic questions about the nature of human beings in society, and to investigate the philosophical foundations of political structures. We shall analyze the concepts of liberty, justice, political power and historical laws. We address questions about political obligation and rights, as well as conduct a thinker-by-thinker historical analysis of social and political thought in the Western Tradition. Our resources include readings from Plato, Aristotle, Augustine, Machiavelli, Hobbes, Rousseau, Marx, Nietzsche and many more, both classical and contemporary.

Prerequisites: PHIL 101 or PHIL 102
