Literacy
Fundamental Program
One-on-one and small group instruction is available to people who are interested in improving their reading, writing and/or math skills. In an effort to meet the needs of the student, the time and place of instruction can be somewhat flexible.
Fundamental level courses are free, except for a small student society fee.
Regional Literacy Coordinator
The Regional Literacy Coordinators of the East and West Kootenay co-coordinate the work of the Columbia Basin Alliance for Literacy (CBAL), a non-profit organization which supports the development of healthy learning communities throughout the Columbia Basin. The Regional Literacy Coordinator in the East Kootenay works out of the Invermere Campus of College of the Rockies, which is a partner in the CBAL.
The objectives of regional literacy coordination are:
- To build, strengthen and support regional literacy networks.
- To participate in regional community development projects, through the development of partnerships and projects.
- To provide consultation, information and support to literacy and ABE practitioners and community organizations and groups involved in developing literacy programs.
- To coordinate professional development training for literacy practitioners and volunteer tutor program coordinators.
- To build awareness about literacy with community organizations and agencies.
The Regional Coordinator can be contacted for information about family, workplace and adult literacy programs throughout the East Kootenay.
