High School Upgrading/Adult Basic Education Programs
The Access Education department offers an educational foundation helping to prepare women and men for further career training or employment during a time of tremendous technological advancement and changing economic conditions.
Opportunities for adults wishing to:
- complete their high school education
- upgrade their skills for entry into the work force
- enter college or university programs
- improve their skills for their own personal benefits
- acquire basic literacy skills
*All Adult Upgrading/High School Completion courses are tuition-free. (Non-tuition fees such as student society fees still apply.)
This department has a wide range of courses and services for expanding your academic, workplace and life skills. The Invermere Campus offers:
- academic skills upgrading and secondary school completion
- literacy instruction
- education and career planning
- prerequisites for college programs and university courses
- vocational and academic skills assessments
Study part-time, full time or take only one course
Students can take course such as math, English, science (i.e. biology), computers, psychology and career preparation.
Course delivery options may include:
- self-paced directed study
- one-on-one
- tutor
- distance & computerized learning
- daytime or evening
Student Profile
Students represent a mixture of individuals who have recently left secondary school and mature students with a variety of life and work experience. Students are taking coruse to upgrade their knowledge and skills:
- to qualify for entry into colelge or university programs
- for better employment opportunities
- to complete high school graduation
- for their own personal benefit
Admission Requirements
An assessment of academic skills is recommended. It is used to identify your present academic skill level, find out if you qualify for exemptions from courses/program prerequisites, determine a level of entry, and aid in course selection.
BC Adult Graduation Diploma
Any course that is Ministry-authorized by either the Ministry of Education (four credits) or the Ministry of advanced education, as requirements for graduation, may be used towards the BC Adult Graduation Diploma (grade 12). To be eligible to graduate on this program, adult students must complete five courses in the post-secondary system or earn at least 20 credits in the secondary system.
The College and the Province of British Columbia can also award ABE Certificates to individuals who have satisfied the following requirements:
- ABE Advanced Level Certificate (grade 11)
- ABE Intermediate Level Certificate (grade 10)
- ABE Fundamental Level Certificate (grade 9)
Access Education offers a variety of courses by distance learning for in-home study. Students should be strongly self-motivated and well able to manage personal learning. Distance learning offers flexibility for those unable to attend scheduled classes and/or who wish to study at their own pace.

GED Preparation
Helps prepare students for the GED exam. Subjects covered are writing, reading, social studies, mathematics and science.
Passing the exam results in a GED certificate from the Ministry of Education may be recognized by employers as equivalent to secondary school completion (Grade 12). Exam sessions are generally held five times a year and are usually held Friday and Saturday but may be held on the Saturday only.

Essential Skills Research Centre
Resource Centre staff are available to provide employers with information about workplace essential skills and opportunities for essential skill testing and workforce skills upgrading. Please call 342-3210.
Contract Training Services
Contract your training with us! The College can provide regular courses or seminars specific to your organization at a location and time that is convenient for you. Many companies in the Columbia Valley have already taken advantage of this service – you can too!
