College of the Rockies has included work experience practica and field placements in many of its programs. This allows students to apply their classroom studies to practical work experience in a related field. Students benefit by gaining valuable hands-on training that allows them a clearer understanding of their classroom studies by applying them in a real-work environment.

How Do I Enroll in a Work Experience Practicum?

For some programs, work placements are mandatory; acceptance into the program automatically admits you into a work placement.

What Are the Prerequisites for Work Placements?

To qualify for work placement you must meet the academic requirements for your program of study. Throughout the course of study, your grade point average and/or course requirements are monitored to ensure your continued eligibility. If you fail to meet the requirements, your situation will be reviewed and you may be asked to withdraw.

How Do I Find a Work Placement?

For some programs, the Career Placement Officer or a faculty member will set up a placement for the student with community employers. However in some programs the responsibility for finding your work placement lies with you. Some students have their own connections with community employers; prior approval of your instructor is required before work placement commences. You must be prepared for the extra effort required not only during your work placement, but also during the academic semesters as you conduct an active search for employment.

During the academic semester you will be given the opportunity to participate in workshops regarding effective job search strategies and preparation for work placement.

What Happens during My Work Placement?

Regular contact is maintained between you, the College and the employer. Both you and the employer will be asked to complete evaluations. After the work placement has ended, you will attend a follow-up interview with your instructor and/or the Career Placement Officer.

How Do I Get Credit for My Work Placement?

As work placements are inclusive of your program requirements, you are assigned a grade of either “Complete” or No Credit Granted”, with reference to the work placement component. Upon satisfactory completion of all academic and work placement requirements for your program, you will receive the appropriate Diploma, Certificate, or Post-Diploma designation on your transcripts.
