Vacancies: 16*
Position: Casual (seasonal)
Placement: May to June, August or October 2018
Wage Range: $90.50 - $95 per day *Please note – the number of position vacancies may be dependent on government funding through the Canada Summer Jobs Program.

Nature and Scope:
Outdoor Education Instructors work to provide quality outdoor education programs to school and other groups as well as hosting duties for rental groups. Bilingual Outdoor Education (OE) Instructors work to provide quality outdoor education programs to school and other groups in both French and English. In the summer, the incumbent will take on a counsellor role in our summer program (see counselling job posting for details). This staff member will also work on the maintenance/janitorial team ensuring the Camp Thunderbird site is able to accommodate all users. Successful applicants for these positions are generally experienced camping staff with Y camping or other related backgrounds.
This position requires the ability to solve problems, make decisions, and apply critical thinking. A flexible attitude combined with a willingness to adapt oneself to a fast-paced environment is also required. In addition, a dedication to the inclusion model of integration is required. This casual position is entitled to an individual YMCA-YWCA membership and a uniform. A willingness to work a flexible schedule is required as shifts may vary and typically include evenings and weekends. Please note that as Camp Thunderbird is a residential camp, staff are required to stay at the camp overnight (in rustic accommodations) to support participants in extended programs.

Responsibilities:
• Adhere to YMCA Camping and BCCA accreditation standards in program and service delivery
• Promote, incorporate and role model the YMCA-YWCA core values in all program activities
• Deliver Outdoor Education programs which provide participants with challenges, develop new skills, and increase environmental awareness and appreciation
• Create and present programming and lessons
• Organize and instruct group activities and games, create lesson plans, participate in program delivery and campfires; adjust programs and make changes as required
• Ensure the safety of all participants
• Demonstrate, promote and role model exceptional interpersonal skills, and a love of working with children and youth
• Assist with other camp related duties, which could include the maintenance of site and equipment, kitchen duties, cleaning and janitorial work

Qualifications:
• Current Standard First Aid and CPR C required (CPR-C recertified in the last 12 months)
- Bronze Cross required; National Lifeguard (NL) preferred but not required (those a NL certification will earn a higher wage than those without)
• 1-2 years’/summers working with children in a day camp, childcare, educational or recreational setting preferred
• Completed High School with post-secondary education/courses an asset
• A clear RCMP/Police Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Screening is required
• High Ropes certification an asset, but not required
• Wilderness First Aid an asset, but not required
• Canoeing, Kayaking, Rock Climbing certifications an asset, but not required
