13-week Timber Framing Program
Now accepting applications for January 2018
This full-time 13-week program is ideal for the person interested in working in the timber frame industry and/or wanting to build their own timber frame structure. Students are provided with practical hands-on experience in a large well-equipped Timber Frame shop supplemented with computer and classroom instruction.
Students gain knowledge of techniques, history, and systems employed in traditional timber framing. Graduates of this course will be well positioned to work with skilled trades' people in the shop and on the job-site.
The students will build 1 personal project and will participate in building a large timber framed structure as a class project.
Instruction and practical experience is provided in:
- Reading/interpreting specifications and sketch drawings
- Solving frame dimensioning math problems
- Timber frame types and traditions
- Timber selection and processing
- Calculating loads, sizing and choosing timbers
- Layout, using a variety of methods appropriate to the needs of each project
- Frame design and geometry
- Joinery decisions
- Hand tool, portable power tool, and stationary machine operations
- Drawing and basic understanding of computer drafting
- Assembling, rigging and raising a frame
Students are required to bring:
- Personal safety equipment: CSA approved steel toed leather work boots, eye protection, ear protection
- Work clothes: long sleeve shirts and long leg pants
- Outdoor work clothes suitable for weather conditions
- Carpenters apron and/or belt (optional)
- 4" 3-ring binder
- Loose-leaf graph and lined paper
- Lumber crayons
- Good mechanical pencil with thick lead
- Carpenters pencil
- Construction Master calculator
The College of the Rockies will supply:
- Toolbox with required hand tools. (You will be responsible to return all tools in good condition loaned to you by the College of the Rockies at the end of the program.)
- A minimum of Apprentice and Workplace Math 11 or equivalent.
- Computers 11 (or equivalent) - highly recommended
- Demonstrate a strong interest in the construction field
- Have some experience in carpentry and computers
- Be physically fit (mobility/lifting), with good manual dexterity, hand-eye coordination and balance, able to work at heights and in adverse weather conditions
- Be comfortable working in the English language
Students will be required to fill in an interview questionnaire about their skills and education prior to acceptance.
