Apprenticeship
The College of the Rockies offers all levels of welding training and testing throughout the year, with options for students in a self-paced continuous intake or fixed intake basis.
Students may receive credit in the Welding Provincial Standard Log Book when completing all levels of C, B and A.

Prerequisite: Apprentices currently sponsored in the BC Apprenticeship system. Upgraders or non-sponsored students should contact the College for seat availability and to register (250) 489-8216.
Prior Learning Assessment: Apprentices or Upgraders interested in obtaining prior learning assessment should contact the College for information.
Red Seal: The College's Apprenticeship programs train to Red Seal certification.
Pre-Apprenticeship
Entrance Requirement Options
Students admitted by Option 1 or 2.
Option 1: Secondary school graduation, or BC Adult Graduation Diploma or GED.
Option 2: Mature student status (age 19 prior to the start of classes) and completion of a College assessment to acceptable level.
IMPORTANT: This program is open to ACE-IT students. Secondary School students interested in this program should contact their counselling at their local Secondary School.
To Register: Apply on-line or in person to the Registration office at the Cranbrook main campus.
Welding Level C - continuous intake.
Program Content
- P1 Introduction and Safety - 1 week
- P2 Oxyfuel Cutting and Gouging - 3 weeks
- P3 Oxy-Acetylene Welding, Soldering & Brazing - 2 weeks
- P4 Shielded Metal Arc Welding - 12 weeks
- P5 Carbon Arc Air Gouging - 1 week
- P6 Gas Metal Arc Welding/Flux Core Arc Welding - 8 weeks
- RK1 Material Handling - 1 week
- RK2 Blueprint Reading - 2 weeks
- RK3 Metallurgy 1 - 1 week
Supplies:
- reference manuals: (P1 to P6, RK1 to RK3)
- welding gloves (leather)
- steel-toed work boots
- flame retardant work clothes (cotton or wool)
- leather welding jacket
- welding helmet (#11 lens)
- welding goggles (#5 lens)
- safety glasses
Note: All P (practical) and RK (related knowledge) modules have a provincial exam to be done to complete the module. All reference materials are available at the College Bookstore.
Welding Level B - continuous intake.

- P8 Gas Metal Arc Welding II - 2 weeks
- P9 Flux Core Arc Welding I - 2 weeks
- P10 Gas Tungsten Arc Welding I - 3 weeks
- RK6 Blueprint Reading II - 1 week
- RK7 Metallurgy II - 1 week
Welding Level A - continuous intake.

Basic Welding
Basic Welding is a general interest program covering the basic information on the following, with emphasis on safety. There is a theory test on all blocks. This program is self-paced, continuous intake program.
- G1 Identify metals
- G2 Identify the gases, components and component handling procedures for oxy-fuel cutting and welding
- G3 Assemble, test, light, adjust, shut-down and disassemble a portable oxyacetylene outfit
- G4 Perform cuts and pierce holes in mild steel plate, round stock and angle iron
- G5 Weld mild steel
- G6 Braze lap joints
- G7 Solder tubing and sheet metal
- G8 Describe the shielded metal arc welding process and its applications
- G10 Identify mild steel electrodes for shielded metal arc welding Weld mild
- G11 steel with shielded metal arc
