Secret History of Hollywood: Cult, B and Exploitation Film Explained | $229 + GST
This course will examine small off-Hollywood producers of film, and the movies they made, from the 1920s to the present. I will further analyze the cultural significance of these types of films and the influence certain directors, such as Ed Wood Jr., Russ Meyer, Hershel Gordon Lewis and others, had on popular culture today. A true overview of the history of film, leaving nothing out.
The goal of this course is to introduce you to an alternative to Hollywood, and a part of film history that was not considered worthy of analysis until the late 1980s. It is a history that most people are not familiar with, yet essential for the true film aficionado.
Possible topics will include the pre-code films from the 1920s, censorship, 1930s serials (such as Flash Gordon and The Crimson Ghost), specific directors and producers from the 1960s, how exploiters and roadshow men fought the legal battles that Hollywood avoided yet took advantage of, and genres of, these types of film, such as Blaxploitation, spaghetti westerns and morality films.
